Transforming Bhopal, its Tradition, and Heritage into a leading destination for Smart, Connected, and Eco-Friendly communities focusing on Education, Research, Entrepreneurship, and Tourism is the vision for a City of Lakes. Bhopal is the 14th largest and 3rd greenest smart city in India. The city was also ranked 3rd in best governance and administrative practices by a renowned Not for profit organization (Janagraha). It is also ranked as the 27th least polluted city amongst 102 cities in Asia. The economy of Bhopal is split between contemporary and traditional industries. MSMEs, which account for more than 7100 billion dollars in exports, require special attention since they may create jobs and allow for skill development.
Despite significant investments in electrical machinery and the transportation industry, tourism, government, education, and health care are the driving forces behind the city's image. Bhopal is home to a slew of national and state-level government agencies and financial institutions. The city's major unit belongs to BHEL, the world's largest manufacturing and engineering company. Many prestigious enterprises are headquartered in Mandideep, a Bhopal industrial suburb, including Eicher, Crompton Greaves, Procter & Gamble, Larsen & Turbo, Fujitsu, and HEG. A Software & Hardware Technology Park is being built in Bhopal by the Madhya Pradesh State Electronics Development Corporation Ltd. Multinational corporations (MNCs) such as Taurus Microsystems, Fujitsu, and Genpact want to establish operations at this Technology Park.
The industrial sector now employs roughly 28000 people directly, with that number expected to rise to 45000 in the next 3-5 years. Bhopal is home to some of the country's most prestigious research facilities and educational institutions. Bhopal competes in the league of cities with the unique mix of industrial presence, research, and a large talent pool thanks to ISRO's Master Control Facility, AIIMS, National Law Academy, MANIT, and SPA, as well as 200 engineering, management, and medical schools.
STRENGTHS OF OUR CITY
Bhopal's magnificent geography and surroundings, along with solid government, have made it one of the most liveable and happy cities in the world. The city appears to have a high tourism potential and the ability to create an atmosphere favorable to commercial growth, allowing Bhopal to be a forerunner in the next economic wave fuelled by the Smart City Mission. Bhopal is centrally located in India, with excellent train, road, and air access. This is a fundamental requirement for attracting investment and industry. There are around 1200 MSMEs in Bhopal. Electrical machinery and transportation equipment businesses have a lot of money invested in them. As the state capital, the city gets significant investments and government attention since it is the engine of the area's economy. Its closeness to Mumbai also facilitates access to India's financial hub. Bhopal is home to several of the country's most prestigious educational institutions, including Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology, National Law Academy, School of Planning and Architecture, and IISER, making it one of the country's most important educational centers.
POTENTIAL OPPORTUNITIES IN THE CITY OF LAKES
Bhopal is renowned as the "City of Lakes" because of its fourteen lakes, which make it a popular tourist destination. Bhopal has a plethora of historical buildings and art and cultural institutes, such as Bharat Bhavan and the National Museum of Man, which make tourism a key draw. Three UNESCO World Heritage Sites are within 50 kilometers of the city, adding to the city's tourist potential.
There is a lot of opportunity for the government's current land pool to be used profitably for developing residential/commercial hubs. The tourist business, as well as adjacent industries such as hotels, restaurant chains, and travel agents, have a lot of room to grow. Local engineering, medical, and management institutes will provide lots of new talent to industries wishing to set up shop in Bhopal. The establishment of a Health/Medical Hub in support of AIIMS might convert Bhopal into a major medical hub in central India.
CHALLENGES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF BHOPAL
Urban sprawl wastes resources by necessitating the development of utility networks and lengthening travel times within the metropolis. This must be addressed by long-term urban design changes. While there are several education institutes that produce new talent, there may be a need to increase education quality and curriculum standards to suit industrial expectations. Cleanliness is a big problem that necessitates infrastructure and monitoring. In the absence of a creative funding mechanism, projects connected to waste management and sanitation necessitate a large financial expenditure.
Inadequate basic infrastructure, particularly in the areas of sanitation and waste management, is a major source of contamination. Bhopal's urban expansion has yet to be contained. A population of 2 million people lives in a 450-square-kilometer municipal region and an 800-square-kilometer planning area. Infrastructure sustainability is being threatened by uncontrolled sprawl. The desire for travel is steadily increasing. Congestion is caused by a high rate of vehicle population expansion and fewer options of local transportation with a smaller service area. Graduating students are being forced to look for work outside of the city due to a lack of job possibilities.
BSCDCL launched the Smart Road Project. people with the goal of serving the people with road connectivity, as well as smart features such as wise smart poles to provide internet services and lighting with CCTV monitoring, weather reporting, and pollution level detectors. These poles have been put 5 in number at equal distances beginning with Bharat Mata square (Ch.0+000) and ending at ploy technique square (Ch.2+200).

TT NAGAR
Bhopal is one of twenty cities chosen in the first round of the Government of India's smart cities competition (GoI). The Area Based Development (ABD) proposal for Bhopal involves the reconstruction of 342 acres of North and South TT Nagar, making it the sole redevelopment and rehabilitation project among the 100 smart cities chosen by the GoI.
THE SHIVAJI NAGAR
The redevelopment & rehabilitation project aims to maximize the value of unused government land in the city's central business district. It will completely change the land into a model that is both environmentally benign and financially viable. It will merge all smart city characteristics into a new urban landscape, guaranteeing that people and buildings have a healthy interaction with each other. Bhopal is fast developing in the contemporary environment, owing to the city's rising population. Wherever there are people, there is traffic, and as the population grows, so does traffic. The Bhopal smart city has various ideas to address the traffic issue. Parking will be made available in busy places such as the New Market, City Market, Bittan Market, and others. These parking spots would feature a variety of capabilities, such as parking infringement detection, online portal booking, smart meters, and so on. In all, this project would have an impact on people by providing integrated smart parking solutions that offer rapid, speedier entry with single spot identification, real-time parking recommendations, and the ability for guests to reserve a parking slot. This would also give a smart answer to the city's journey time, carbon emissions, search time, and traffic congestion. It also enhances traffic flow within the parking lot through effective design and creation.
As part of smart city initiatives, Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation Limited (BSCDCL) has undertaken a project for smart traffic management – Integrated Traffic Management System (ITMS), which will provide greater information to authorities in order for them to proactively manage the ongoing traffic situation, improve traffic discipline through effective enforcement, increase road safety by preventing accidents, and allow citizens to make informed travel choices. With ITMS, the entire strain of traffic on the roadways will be reduced, resulting in increased reliability for people and local companies, hence increasing overall productivity levels.

This will be utilized to make cities smarter by managing the operations of the smart components installed across the cities. This would eventually benefit the people of Madhya Pradesh's smart cities by utilizing ICT as the backbone and seamless integration with all necessary & existing ICT systems / Smart components. This requires that at least 10% of the power consumed come from renewable sources. As part of the solar city objective, Bhopal Smart City Development Corporation Limited has taken the initiative to create green electricity through the building of rooftop solar power plants. And, a total of 862 projects have been completed with a staggering growth of 95% in the building infrastructure. After the implementation of the RERA Act in Bhopal, there’s an uptick in the prospect of investment in the real estate sector. The Real Estate Regulation and Development Act (RERA) of 2016 established a single sectoral regulator for real estate projects to safeguard the interests of buyers. In most places, the lack of trust between developers and property buyers has been a major source of worry. There have also been multiple cases of failing to deliver on promises made to property purchasers, as well as undue delays.
As a result, laws to safeguard the buyer's rights became necessary. Thus, on 1 May 2016, the Indian parliament approved the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act (RERA), 2016, notifying 56 provisions of the Act in order to create a single sectoral regulator to manage the real estate market. However, actual RERA implementation began only in 2017, with the other 32 provisions coming into force on May 1, 2017. There has been a gradual progression in the property market of Bhopal as the Monsoon advances towards Central India. The real estate sector in the city has been showing a promising pattern of people opting to buy residential and commercial spaces.
